One thing all food packaging manufacturers have in common is their need for cling films that keep the food fresh for a longer duration. The Challenge 

A few years ago, we were approached by a global consumer food cling film manufacturing company to relaunch one of their flagship cling films, enhancing packed food items and extending the shelf life of oxygen-sensitive products. Their cling film lacked performance against oxygen deterioration that affected the quality & shelf life of food products. This was due to oxygen exposure, resulting in loss of nutrients, freshness, taste and aroma in a short period of time. To extend the shelf-life, keep food fresh and ensure consistency & achieve customer satisfaction, the client needed to produce cling films that would prevent oxygen and light ingress. That’s when they came to Perfect Colourants & Plastics Pvt. Ltd. looking for a solution which was cost-effective, food-safe, while not altering the existing film production process. 

The Solution

We invited the development team to our state-of-the-art facility to discuss their requirements. Our team assessed the root cause of the failure and aligned on the path to meet their cling film goals. We discovered that oxygen-induced deterioration in cling film-packed food could lead to major quality issues. Even a small trace of oxygen, viz >0.1% can trigger oxidation levels, affecting colour, taste, nutritional value and aroma, reducing shelf-life of cooked food, fruits, vegetables & dairy products. Oxygen levels of 2% accelerate the growth of microbes and bacteria. The film needed to exhibit a balanced oxygen removal, without impacting the food quality. Our team was fully committed to developing an oxygen scavenging solution that could quickly achieve & also maintain a nearly-zero oxygen level without introducing any chemical by-product or compromising the film integrity. 

Formulating a High-Performance Tailored Oxygen Scavenger Masterbatch for Cling Films 

With these insights, the challenge was to formulate a masterbatch that maintained film strength and met the need for 02 barrier performance, and did not increase costs. Through collaboration efforts and agile development, we achieved the client's goals. The 02 barrier masterbatch actively absorbs oxygen trapped in packed food, slowing down oxygen ingress. The final solution was compatible with the client's existing film extrusion and food-grade compliant, meeting safety & industrial standards. The masterbatch solution helped preserve end food product texture & freshness, allowing for shelf-life extension without significantly increasing manufacturing costs.
